The Volvo XC90 is a large 4x4 which has been a runaway success for the Swedish firm.

Famed for its safe, well-built vehicles, the XC90 sold in droves both in Europe and the USA.

The first generation, built between 2002 and 2014, was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in 2001. It came with seven seats and a huge amount of practicality. We found it very comfortable and refined, with an impressive diesel engine to cut down on the cost of running such a large car.

It’s not as nice to drive as a BMW X5 or Audi Q7, but impressed in nearly every other way.

And then in 2014 Volvo announced a new model, which not only was big news in its own right but also paved the way for a total regeneration of the firm’s line-up. By 2020 this model of XC90 will be the oldest car in the range.
