Designed as a joint-collaboration with Audi and Porsche the Volkswagen Touareg also sired the Audi Q7 (on a stretched wheelbase on account of its seven seats) and the sporty Porsche Cayenne when it was introduced to the UK in 2003.

There were a handful of petrol engines offered in the Touareg, with the highlight undoubtedly the 4.2-litre V8. However, it’s the diesel models that appealed most with a choice of 2.5, 3 and 5-litre units – the latter, an incredible V10, produces 313bhp and a faintly ridiculous 750Nm of torque. A special edition R50 model, available from 2008-2009, increased this to 350bhp and 850Nm.

The range was tweaked in 2007 with revisions to the on-board technology and a change to the front end. And in 2009 a Bluemotion model was introduced with a 225bhp 3-litre V6 diesel engine capable of 34mpg and 219g/km of CO2 emissions.
