Before the Volkswagen Bora, was the Volkswagen Jetta. Well, the Jetta mark one certainly was as it first went on sale in 1984 and just like the Bora it was a saloon version of the much more popular Volkswagen Golf.

While it lacked the outright practicality of the hatchback Golf, the Jetta had a decent amount of space for passengers and the saloon boot was a good sized.

The Jetta exited the sales floor in 1999 to be replaced by the Volkswagen Bora which occupied the dealership for five years. Despite the name change, it was the same trick – a Golf with a saloon boot.

In 2006 VW relented and unveiled an all new Jetta. This one was based on the mark five Golf though it was significantly bigger and provided a budget version of the larger Volkswagen Passat. It had plenty of space for passengers including three adults in the back, utilised the same engines as the Golf including frugal and strong diesels, and packed a huge boot
