Want to know which vans are most reliable? We've got the answers, thanks to the 2017 FN50 van reliability survey,

Carried out by the Parkers Vans sister title Fleet News, the FN50 is the most comprehensive light commercial vehicle (LCV) reliability survey in the business, as it's based on data from the 50 largest fleet operators in the UK.

The fleets involved are asked to rank their vans (and pickups) for breakdowns and warranty claims, generating a huge pool of info – about the individual van models and van manufacturers that perform best for reliability.

Here we’ve listed the individual model results for 2017 – with details of 2016, 2015 and 2014 in a table at the end for comparison

We've also got info on which van makers are most reliable and the best-performing van dealers below as well.

10) Vauxhall Combo

Renault’s highly competent medium van jumps from 13th in 2016 to seventh in 2017 – though it still finishes two places below the Vauxhall Vivaro, the British-built version of the same thing.

6) Mercedes Vito

Mercedes Vito in the 2017 FN50 van reliability survey

The Vito climbs one place to finish just outside the top five in the 2017 FN50 reliability survey. Mercedes vans come with 30 years’ of roadside assistance as standard, but it doesn’t look like you’ll need it.

5) Vauxhall Vivaro

Vauxhall Vivaro in the 2017 FN50 van reliability survey

A respectable finish for the only van still built in Britain – but fifth place is actually two spots lower than the Vauxhall Vivaro managed last year. Way better than arch rival the Ford Transit Custom, even so…

4) Ford Transit

Ford Transit in the 2017 FN50 van reliability survey

The full-size Transit is the only Ford model to make the top 10 most reliable list in 2017 – with both the Transit Custom and Transit Connect failing to repeat their 2016 performances. Bad news for Ford buyers?

3) VW Transporter

VW Transporter in the 2017 FN50 van reliability survey

The most reliable medium van is once again the Volkswagen Transporter – a title it’s claimed since at least 2014 in the FN50 survey. Third place is one lower than 2016, but VW probably won’t be too worried…

Leaping from fifth in 2016 to second in 2017 is the Volkswagen Caddy – making it by far the most reliable small van in the FN50 survey as a result. It’s a class apart from its rivals in most other areas, too.

1) Mercedes Sprinter

Mercedes Sprinter in the 2017 FN50 van reliability survey

Retaining the top spot for the third year running, the Mercedes Sprinter is once again the UK’s most reliable van. Given the hard miles these large vans clock up pounding motorways, delivering parcels, that’s a proper testament to their quality.

Notable absentee: Ford Transit Custom

Ford Transit Custom fails to make 2017 FN50 van reliability survey top 10

It’s hard not to notice that the UK’s best-selling van, the Ford Transit Custom, does not feature in the FN50 most reliable vans top 10 in 2017. In fact, we have data on the top 15, and it doesn’t appear there either – and nor does the Transit Connect.

Ford sells vast numbers of Transit Customs, but it’s still a shock to see it drop out entirely, especially after its fifth place finish in 2016. There has been some trouble with the Euro 6 engines, but the same problems would apply to the full-size Transit, and that at least has maintained its position…
