If the Suzuki Vitara started the sporty soft-roader segment, the Toyota RAV4, unveiled in 1994, ran with it and made it the success it is today. Standing for Recreational Active Vehicle with four-wheel drive, in truth the Toyota RAV4 was never intended for serious off-roading, merely for dealing with sandy beaches and rutted roads.

Nevertheless, we’re now onto the fourth generation of the model, the first being replaced in 2000, then the third edition arriving in 2006 and the fourth and current model available for sale in 2013.

Only the first two generations were available as three-door models, the first even including a canvas soft-top rear option, while all were able to be purchased as practical five-doors.
