Although it didn’t steal as many headlines as its super-quick Evolution sibling, the Mitsubishi Lancer was not only a hugely popular car for the Japanese firm with over six million sold worldwide, it’s also one of the firm’s longest running in production and is still on sale in some markets today.

Available in a variety of bodystyles through the years including a hatchback, saloon and estate, the first model appeared in the UK in 1984 as a saloon.

The Mitsubishi Lancer was very cheap for its time and shared many style features with the Evolution models that became famous through its success in the World Rally championship.

Hugely practical with generous equipment levels, the Lancer was an ideal budget family car too. The estate model rivalled the Ford Focus estate and Volkswagen Golf estate here in the UK, while the more popular saloon model went up against cars like the Mazda 3 saloon and Dodge Avenger.

It was marketed under a variety of names around the world including the Dodge Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer and Colt Lancer.
