The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is based on its sibling, the A-Class. That’s no bad thing as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback is a popular seller and the latest A-Class is a big improvement over the previous generation.
The GLA-Class is less about being a highly-capable off-roader and more a crossover better suited to tackling urban jungles rather than leafy ones.
The compact 4x4 is up against some tough competition in the shape of the Audi Q3, Volkswagen Tiguan and BMW X1. Just like its rivals the GLA-Class can be chosen with either two or four-wheel drive.
Buyers opting for the two-wheel drive version will have to settle for the entry-level diesel model as the rest of the range comes with Mercedes’ ‘4MATIC’ four-wheel drive system. The standard model doesn’t sit as high as most crossovers either, but those looking to drive on the rough stuff can choose the optional off-road pack that boosts ground clearance and includes a downhill speed limiter.
