As distinctive cars go it is hard to beat the Mazda RX-8. It’s a four-door coupe powered by an unusual rotary engine.

The model harks back to the Mazda RX-7 that also used a rotary, or Wankel, engine. This petrol-powered motor uses a triangular piston and is known for its light weight and high power output – ideal for a sports car.

But the engine wasn’t the only convention-defying aspect to the car – the rear doors were too. These had hinges at the rear not the front so the door opened backwards. These so-called ‘suicide’ doors meant that access to the rear seats was so much easier, making it a doddle for kids to get in.
