Mazda might be known for its excellent MX-5, but it’s been making the practical Mazda 5 people carrier since 2005, and launched its second generation to take on the Renault Scenic, Ford C-Max and VW Touran in 2010.

A full seven-seater, with the benefit of sliding rear doors, there are few more compact MPVs quite as practical as the 5 – even if using all the seats only leaves a miserly 112-litre boot space. Like the rest of the Mazda range the 5 is enjoyable to drive, with its choice of 1.8-litre and 2-litre petrol engines producing 113bhp and 143bhp respectively. A pair of 2-litre diesels, with outputs of 110bhp and 143bhp complete the engine line-up, while the trim levels include entry-level TS then TS2 – a range-topping Sport Nav arrived in 2008.
