There have been four versions of the Land Rover Discovery, but the original was introduced in 1989. Dubbed the Discovery I, the first model was on sale from ’89 to 1998 and featured a four-cylinder petrol engine – something we’ve never seen since.

It was based on the underpinnings of the far more prestigious Range Rover, but was built to compete with sturdy off-roaders such as the Mitsubishi Shogun and Isuzu Trooper. It initially came with just three doors, but a five-door version was released in 1990. All had five seats, but there was also the option to have a pair of jump seats in the boot for another two people to sit on. There was a mixture of petrol and diesel engines used to power it, including the famous 3.9-litre Rover V8.
