The Jaguar XK is the British firm’s take on a sport grand tourer that’s able to whisk two passengers and some weekend luggage from Chelsea in London down to the south of France.

The first version was driven into showrooms in 2006 and won plaudits for its striking design and sleek looks. It was certainly a major step-up from the heavier Jaguar XK8 because the two-door coupe was largely made from aluminium just like its larger saloon brother the Jaguar XJ saloon.

The advantage of aluminium is the car is lighter and this aids performance, handling and fuel economy. So the British sports coupe could now provide a real alternative to BMW 6 Series Coupe, the Mercedes-Benz SL Class and even, to some extent, the Porsche 911 coupe.

The XK was offered with a few engine choices including a 4.2-litre V8 as the initial engine choice. It could turn in a 0-62mph time of 6.2 seconds and the engine was smooth and very responsive. There was only one gearbox a six-speed automatic that could come with a sport mode that included Formula 1 style paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel for gear changes.
