It’s a distinctive and intriguing thing, the Citroen DS4. Distinctive because nothing else in the family car class looks remotely like and intriguing because it’s difficult to pigeonhole exactly what it’s supposed to be.

At first glance the Citroen DS4 is a five-door hatchback – it shares its underpinnings, engines and other elements with the Citroen C4 within the firm’s range. Look closely and you’ll spot the rear doors are smaller than normal and their handles are hidden within the window frame, lending it an almost coupe-like aura. Additionally it rides higher than most in this segment too, almost as if it’s a crossover.
