This Volkswagen Polo is arguably the most upmarket small car that you can buy. It's refined, stylish and - depending on which engine you choose - can be incredibly frugal or delightfully quick.

Buying used

The most sought after engines are the 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.6-litre diesel. Both offer value-for-money running costs, while the 1.2-litre suits a wide range of buyers.

The SE trim offers a decent level of equipment and is attractively priced – therefore it’s the most popular equipment grade and accounts for more than half of all Polos on the market.

Polo on-sale dates are October 2009 (59-plate registration) for the five-door; the three-door is slightly later, from December 2009.

The low emissions Bluemotion model was introduced in February 2010.

The Polo is an evergreen choice with buyers of all ages and budgets, primarily because it’s a high-quality small car that’s big on safety.

It makes an ideal first car for those that have recently passed their driving test or a second family car.

DSG automatic models only account for a small proportion of cars on the market and are therefore in demand with buyers who must have an automatic gearbox.

The economical Bluemotion will always be sought after and the zero road tax and 80mpg plus economy are excellent selling points.
