Buyers love the Golf hatchback, but the estate didn't take off in the same way. In fact, it's quite rare.

Diesels make the most sense. There are five versions of the 1.9 TDI engine with 90, 100, 110, 115 and 130 bhp. The 115bhp version is the best all-rounder. 1.6 petrol is a bit underpowered for a fully-laden estate, 1.8T has useful turbo power. 2.0 petrol is a bit thirsty, 2.3 V5 is an extravagance.

Predictable and controlled under most conditions. Plush ride over bumpy roads, quiet on the motorway, easy to drive slow, fast or slot into a tight space in Asda's car park.
