Buyers love the Golf hatchback, but the estate didn't take off in the same way. In fact, it's quite rare.

Comfort

Fine in the back for a couple of growing kids, but adults will get grumpy after a couple of hours. Seats are comfy.

Practicality

Reasonable boot space, but Ford Focus is better (and VW's Passat is miles bigger for similar money). Inside, there's a world of hidden storage to discover. Cup holders, hidey holes for sunglasses, CDs etc. Cool.

Behind the wheel

Anyone can get comfy in a Golf. Supportive seats, simple dash layout, pedals where you expect them to be. All the controls are accessible and feel superbly engineered. Stereo controls are fiddly to use on the move.
