The Toyota Aygo is the Japanese firm’s take on an urban runabout jointly developed with Peugeot and Citroen (although the vehicle design is all Toyota's work).

The Aygo has a frugal yet feisty three-cylinder engine, ultra-low running costs and superior quality to most cars this small.

Available as a three or five-door, it will just about transport four six-foot adults in relative comfort, with nimble handling and a smooth ride. However, the boot is tiny and the cabin is fairly basic too.

Good commuter

The Toyota Aygo has built an enviable reputation as a fine city runabout and commuter transport since it was introduced in 2005 alongside its Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107 sister cars. It’s helped in it city car appeal by coming with sub-100g/km carbon dioxide emissions as a manual gearbox model to avoid paying London’s Congestion Charge.

As the Aygo is available in three- and five-door body styles, it offers buyers plenty of versatility, the five-door model proving popular with young families who need to added ease of rear doors when loading up the kids.

Pricing is another big factor and the Aygo is very affordable to buy and run, and it comes with the peace of mind of Toyota’s excellent dealers. A light facelift in early 2012 has kept the Aygo to the forefront of the city car sector and it still holds its own easily among newer rivals.

One engine, two gearboxes

The Aygo was originally offered with the choice of a 1.0-litre petrol engine with 67bhp or a 1.4-litre turbodiesel with 53bhp, the diesel arriving in 2006.

Despite the diesel providing 68.9mpg economy and 109g/km CO2 emissions, it was not a big seller.

Improvements to the petrol engine’s economy and emissions in 2009 rendered the diesel all but redundant in the Aygo range and Toyota dropped it to make the petrol the only engine choice. The petrol engine now gives 65.7mpg and 99g/km when coupled to the standard five-speed manual gearbox, putting the Toyota on a par with most small diesel rivals.

There is also the choice of a five-speed automated manual gearbox called Multimode that offers gearchanges without the need for a clutch pedal. The only downside to the Multimode transmission is it pushes economy down to 62.7mpg and emissions up to 104g/km.

Facelift in 2013

A facelift in 2013 ushered in an all-new line-up of equipment levels. You can now choose between Active, Active Plus, Mode and Move.

Fuel economy. Advertised combined mpg is 62. I am getting around 57mpg, with what admittedly is a slightly heavy foot. Mostly motorway driving.
