This is the third generation of the popular Skoda Octavia from the Czech maker. It is now 90mm longer and 45mm wider than the previous generation but it also looks more elegant than before.

Running costs

Skoda Octavia running costs are affordable right across the range. If you are on a tight budget and need to keep your monthly spending down go for the 108bhp Greenline diesel that has a claimed average economy of 83mpg.

All the other diesels in are that general ballpark, the most thirsty being the 2.0-litre which averages around 63mpg. The most frugal petrol version is the 103bhp 1.2-litre that returns an average of 57.6mpg.

Insurance will be cheap for all Octavias because it is not seen as a performance car, but the lower-powered petrols will have the lowest premiums. Servicing at Skoda dealerships is affordable and parts are cheap.

Resale values are ordinary: expect to get around 35% of the car’s original value after three years/30,000 miles. The diesels are best at holding their value, particularly the 2.0-litre version.
