The Skoda Octavia is one of the best family cars around. Spacious, reliable, well built and good to drive, it also comes with a great range of engines.

With a score of four stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests the Skoda Octavia's safety levels are fairly high. Many newer hatchbacks like the Ford Focus and Peugeot 308 have been awarded the maximum five stars, however. Driver, passenger and side airbags are standard, while curtain bags are optional (standard on L&K models) as are active headrests. All models get central locking and an immobiliser plus an alarm is standard on Ambiente (later updated to SE) or Elegance trim levels otherwise it's an option.

As it uses Volkswagen components and mechanicals, the Skoda Octavia's reliability record should continue to grow without any major glitches. We've heard of no problems and the Octavia regularly tops owner satisfaction surveys.

Two recalls - one to fix bolts on the tandem fuel pump cover (2004) and another to change the flywheel (cars built between 2004 and 2005).
