Fabia is another VW Group success story and further strengthens Skoda's reputation as a quality manufacturer. The styling divides opinion.

Of the small petrol engines the four-valve-per-cylinder versions are significantly better to drive than the two valve units although these will suffice if you're undemanding. The 1.2 is great for around-town driving, with a great-sounding engine, and is fine for short motorway trips. Turbo-diesel units are fantastic, especially the 130bhp vRS engine.

SDI very slow.

A fine combination of responsiveness and refinement, with predictable handling and good roadholding. Steering is light and easy fine around town and on the open road. Good brakes and a confident gearchange. vRS is a genuine hot-hatch alternative.
