The Mercedes-Benz SL Class was once considered the ultimate soft-top for prestige, comfort and effortless touring. The body is smoothly styled - with cleanly sculpted panelling and a low-sloping nose - but looked a little clumsy beside the petite SLK in the late 1990s Mercedes line-up, and obese in comparison to the latest SL.

Buying used

Look for a fully stamped service history as it can give a priceless insight into the car's past, indicating any particular problems that may crop up - and cost you - in the future. If there are any question marks over service history, get it checked by a M-B specialist before buying.

Selling

The three pointed star and superb build quality contribute to continuously strong values, even in the face of SLK and new SL model. SLs are also relatively scarce - which keeps the prices high - but there are many modern alternatives on the market that offer more in terms of better equipment and ingenuity.
