Old-generation S Class is technologically sophisticated, but just too big. Virtually unrivalled for prestige, comfort, power and reliability, these behemoths lack the discreet elegance of the BMW 7-Series or Audi A8.

Equipment

All are rear-wheel drive, with catalytic converter, colour-coded bumpers, electric heated mirrors, full lower body mouldings, leather-trimmed steering wheel, height-adjustable seats and steering column, walnut fascia and console trims. 400 SE/SEL add cruise control (optional on 300). 500 SE/SEL add leather upholstery, cruise control, uprated audio. 600 SEL has auto differential lock, self-levelling suspension, ASR acceleration skid control system (optional on others).

500 SEC and 600 SEC coupés joined the range October '92. Spec similar to 500/600 SE. Range was rebadged August '93, with 300 and 400 receiving uprated engines. 300 SE/SEL renamed S320/S320 Limo, 400 SE/SEL became S420/S420 Limo, 500 and 600 SEC rebadged S500 and S600 Coupés, with saloons as S500/ S500 Limo and S600 Limo. S280 saloon launched with four- or optional five-speed auto gearbox also available on S320/S320 Limo.

Five-speed gearbox standard on rest of range. Further revisions in April '94. All models received restyled grille, bumpers, side mouldings and boot lid, standard cruise control. S280 and S320 got auto locking differential (ASD), climate control, S320 engine modified for more torque, S420 and S500 gained acceleration skid control (ASR). S320 gained 15-hole alloy wheels, Coupés gained on five-hole 18in alloy wheels, S500 Coupé got heated front seats, S600 self-levelling suspension.

S420 Coupe added in April 96, with equipment similar to S420 saloon. Another equipment upgrade in June 96 brought ASR to S280/S320; all gained rain sensor, remote boot release; S600 gained new 16" alloy wheels, nappa leather upholstery. Coupé models were rebadged CL Class, gaining ‘Parktronic’ parking sensor system, nappa leather upholstery. All models had ‘Brake Assist’ emergency braking from January '97, and, from June '97, metallic paint, leather trim, heated electric seats and an upgraded audio.
