The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is the car that some buyers may have been waiting many years for. It's a proper 4x4 with seven-seat practicality and yet has an interior that matches any of the company's saloons for comfort and style.

Equipment

Upon launch there were three trim levels available to go along with the trio of engines available. In 2009 the GL-Class was facelifted and the engines updated, with a choice of either standard or Sport trim.

Standard Mercedes-Benz GL-Class equipment

The GL320 CDI has upholstery in Artico (synthetic leather), Poplar wood trim, electrically-adjustable front seats, climate control, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, automatic headlamps and wipers, leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel, electric windows, electric folding and heated door mirrors, trip computer, DVD-based satellite navigation, CD autochanger and Parktronic parking sensors. The GL420 CDI adds leather upholstery with burr walnut trim, electrically-adjustable seats and steering column plus climate control in the rear. The range-topping GL500 has Nappa leather upholstery, heated seats in the back, xenon headlamps that turn in the direction in which the car is moving and the Easy-Pack tailgate that opens and closes automatically.

After the facelift in 2009 the GL-Class trim levels didn’t change, the new engines carrying over the kit from the ones they replaced.

Optional Mercedes-Benz GL-Class accessories

There’s a huge range of optional extras available for the GL-Class. To begin with you can choose a set of 20-inch alloy wheels. If that’s not enough, you can upgrade to 21-inch wheels too for the ultimate in showmanship. There’s a Sports Styling Package, which includes Bi-xenon headlights, aluminium running boards, 20-inch alloys, chrome finish roof bars and privacy glass from the B-pillar back.

The Luxury Seat Package includes two-tone leather upholstery with multi-contour front seating, fitted with a memory system which can store up to three seat settings. The seats are, of course, electrically adjustable.

You can specify radar-guided cruise control, which automatically adjusts the car’s speed when using cruise control to keep you a set distance from the car in front. You can also have blind spot assist, which lets you know when there’s a car in your blind spot.

Other optional equipment includes ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, keyless entry, heated rear seats, an ashtray, a tyre pressure monitoring system, DAB digital radio, TV tuner, surround sound system, an electric glass sunroof, wood- or leather-trimmed steering wheel, reversing camera, a rear seat entertainment system, telephone pre-wiring and either folding or detectable tow bar.
