When initially launched in 2005, this car created a new niche – a saloon/coupe crossover - and while this new version takes design cues from Merc’s £140k SLS supercar it’s based on the rather more sedate E-Class saloon. It comes in standard or Sport trims and all pre 2014 models have a seven-speed automatic gearbox (after 2014 a selection gained the new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic), Attention Assist, ESP, six airbags, Isofix child seat mounts, Pre-Safe safety system and a tyre pressure monitoring system.Standard equipmentThe standard trim level of the Mercedes CLS comes with five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, Direct Control Comfort suspension and electrically assisted power steering. It also has auto dimming door mirrors with electric adjustment and heating, Bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, Parktronic with Active Park Assist to help find and guide the car into parking spaces, LED rear lights, automatic windscreen wipers and heated windscreen washers.Metallic paint is standard for the CLS, as is black leather upholstery and black ash wood trim, DAB digital radio, CD stereo with six-disc autochanger, MP3 connection, Bluetooth for hands-free mobile phone use, and Mercedes’ COMAND media interface with 7-inch colour display screen, satellite navigation and voice control. In 2014 the screen was changed for an 8-inch example that sits proud of the dashboardFurther standard fare for the CLS includes climate control, electric windows all round, electric front seat adjustment, remote boot release and illuminated door handles.If you choose the Sport version of the CLS, you get AMG floor mats, a front armrest with storage compartment, sports pedals and AMG three-spoke steering wheel, and for the CLS500 Sport you get Black Passion leather upholstery.Other standard stuff for the CLS Sport covers AMG front and rear lower bumpers, Intelligent Light System with Active Light System to help see further round corners at night, High Beam Assist to automatically dip the headlights when the car senses oncoming traffic, sports-tuned suspension and 19-inch AMG alloy wheels.Mercedes CLS accessoriesMercedes CLS customers can choose from a selection of 18- and 19-inch optional alloy wheels, semi-active air suspension (which is standard on the CLS500), an electric glass sunroof, remote boot closing and reversing camera that is only available in conjunction with the COMAND Online system.Other options include the COMAND Online system that comes with sat-nav and DVD player, while an uprated Harman Kardon stereo is also on offer, as well as a television tuner.In 2014 a new Multibeam LED lighting system was added to the options list, with 24 individual high performance LED chips the new system can operate each independently of each other. That means it dazzles other drivers less and reacts quicker and high beam performance is far increased, with a range of around 485-metres.Mercedes usual safety options are on the accessory list, including Lane Tracking, Blind Spot Assist and Speed Limit Assist. A roof rack is another option for the CLS, as are leather seats in a variety of colours and finishes, massage front seats, position memory for the front seats, ambient lighting and remote garage door opener.
