The A-Class is the smallest - and most affordable - model in the Mercedes line-up. As a small family car, it's an alternative to models like the Audi A3 or BMW 1-Series, but it's unusual upright styling makes it look more like a people carrier.

Buying used

A second hand A-Class can be a good buy if you live in town, but the Mercedes badge often means private sellers asking more than it's worth. Check for any parking damage and avoid the A150 as it's sluggish. Facelifted cars were introduced in mid-2008 and get an improved cabin as well as exterior tweaks. There won't be anything on the used market for a while yet except for the ex-demonstrators which might offer a useful discount.

Selling

The A-Class is a quirky alternative to standard hatchbacks like the BMW 1-Series or Audi A3. It does boast good passenger space and build quality is impressive. These should be strong selling points.
