Years of criticism for being too 'traditional' and flagging sales prompted Jaguar to take a radical step when replacing the S-Type. The Jaguar XF has hints of previous Jaguars in details of its design, but looks and feels every inch a modern, upmarket saloon.

Buying used

All XF models are very well equipped and used prices drop quicker than equivalent German premium models. That said given its generous equipment and affordable prices, the XF makes a strong used buy.

Diesel models will be more expensive than the petrol V6, but for someone doing 5000 miles a year, the petrol V6 might prove to be more cost-effective. Revised models (with all new engines) were introduced in March 2009 so will be available on an 09-plate or later. The introduction of the 3.0-litre V6 diesel will mean older 2.7-litre diesel models will be more affordable.

Selling

Diesel versions of the XF will be easiest to sell, but all should be appealing to used car buyers looking for a classy performance saloon.
