Designing a compact 4x4 car that's good on the road, comfortable and yet also possesses some off road ability is no easy feat. But BMW has come close with the X3 - the smaller brother to the muscular X5.

The range was facelifted in mid 2006 and this brought a slightly refreshed interior and minor exterior styling tweaks. Post facelift models have a larger 'kidney' grille and all round colour coded bumpers while the twin-turbo 3.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines were also introduced.

Both 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre diesels are popular choices and are very easy to sell. They pull well, are quiet and offer decent economy. The market is still strong for the other models and - as long as it's sensibly - priced there should be no problems moving and X3 on.
