For those executives seeking more practicality than the saloon can offer, the BMW 5 Series Touring (or estate in everyday speak) is BMW’s answer. It takes on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate and the Audi A6 Avant, and each of these estates aren’t simply a bigger, boxy version of the saloons they are based on.

BMW 5 Series Touring safety is impressive. It is packed with both active and passive safety systems and has been awarded the top five-star Euro NCAP rating. There are multiple airbags, side impact protection, front anti-whiplash head restraints and crash sensors which cut off the fuel and battery, release the locks and activate the hazard warning lights.

To keep the driver out of trouble there are myriad electronic safety systems including stability and brake controls that help prevent loss of vehicle control in a skid and apply the maximum braking in an emergency stop. The cruise control also comes with brake and speed limiting functions, and there is an optional night vision, four-wheel steering and lane departure warning system to further enhance driver safety.

BMW 5 Series Touring reliability provides absolutely no cause for concern. BMW always features well in reliability surveys and is a firm fleet favourite for not breaking down. The previous model proved extremely sound though there were a couple of recalls regarding brake servo assistance and rear axles, and some owners have reported minor glitches plus some high mileage diesels required the injectors and turbo chargers to be replaced.

This is to be expected on any car and BMW has gained a strong reputation for producing quality cars that are built to last.
