4.5 out of 5

BMWs M models have always had a reputation for superb engines, masses of driver appeal and useable performance. The M5 takes this to new levels however thanks a 5.0-litre V10 engine that boasts a whopping 507bhp - this gives the M5 a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds (4.8 seconds in the Touring) and the instant manner in which it delivers that performance is astonishing.

It's a good all rounder too - both the saloon and Touring retain the same practicality as the standard 5-Series models while the ride is supple enough for comfortable everyday transport. There's no manual gearbox available, only a seven-speed SMG sequential transmission, but this is mightily impressive and comes with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifts as standard.

However the M5 is expensive to run and it's impossible to exploit the car's full potential on UK roads.
