Sleek and elegant German coupes are nothing new, though the A5 is the first of this size that Audi has built in a long time. It’s a good all-round package that comes close to matching the BMW 3-Series Coupe and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe with a fine range of engines, a high quality interior and an enjoyable driving experience.

Comfort

Although there are two seats in the back, these are strictly for children only. A lack of headroom makes it unsuitable for adults, while passengers with long legs will find the rear very cramped indeed. It’s also difficult to get in-and-out of. Aside from that the A5 is easy to get along with - the seats are comfortable while the interior oozes style and is meticulously put together.

On the move Audi A5 Coupe comfort levels mean it’s fairly serene, with wind and road noise suppressed at all but the highest speeds. The car is well insulated against engine noise too, even in the diesels.

Practicality

Despite not being designed with practicality as the biggest concern, the A5 measures up well with a large boot that will easily swallow a couple of suitcases. It is shallow though which means you need to stretch to get to items at the back. If you need extra room the rear seats fold down. It's possible to specify a key that doesn’t need to be taken out of your pocket or bag - instead the car senses you approach, unlocks the car and can be started by a button on the dash.

Behind the wheel

The driver gets a great driving position, thanks to a steering wheel that adjusts for height and reach and a multi-adjustable seat (although adjustment is electric only on top models). Visibility is a problem from a number of angles - when cornering or turning out of junctions, the thick windscreen pillars obstruct the view, while a small rear screen makes for limited visibility out of the back.

The cabin itself is superbly constructed however and the layout is typical Audi - clear, easy to navigate and beautifully finished while all the controls work with real precision.
