From a distance it has the looks of the Golf GTI, but unfortunately for the Polo bigger hasn't proved to be better and it's fair to say the Polo has a lot of growing up to do to be on a par with its more illustrious big brother. A power output of 178bhp makes the Polo a quick car but it feels a little sanitised, so if you really are after a ballsy ‘hot’ hatch you’ll probably go for a Clio Renaultsport.

Buying used

With 50 miles on the plate you could save yourself £500 and with a car that has only completed 1,500 miles in several months you could be looking at saving yourself £1,500. Remember to make sure the car has a full service history and that panels are straight and there are no signs of damage or knocks. Some GTI-ers can be a reckless bunch so watch out for any signs of dramas.

Selling

After one year and 10,000 miles you Polo GTI should retain 74% of its value whereas if you keep it for three years and add 30,000 you get 48% of its value back.
