Saab has given the 9-3 Sportwagon a dose of all-terrain ability with the 9-3X. It undercuts cars like the Audi A4 Allroad and Subaru Outback on price and offers an alternative to other so-called 'crossover' vehicles like the BMW X1 or Nissan Qashqai.

The 9-3X basically takes a 9-3 Sportwagon and raises the suspension and adds four-wheel drive on the petrol version.

But for cost reasons, Saab has chosen to offer only a front-wheel drive diesel version in between the standard 9-3 and the petrol X model. The car feels very much like a 9-3 Sportwagon on the road with the extra traction security of all-wheel drive on petrol models.
