Volkswagen Polo Hatchback (94-00)

Value

3 out of 5

VWs hold their values better than most cars. Mine's 8 now, and is worth about 900-1000 according to Parkers/Glass's

Costs

3 out of 5

My dads a mechanic so i get the labour for free! As for parts is hasn't had much needed whilst i've had it. Parts are fairly expensive, but you get what you pay for: quality product for a quality car - keep it all original VW and it'll do another 170k!!

Performance

3 out of 5

Can leave most other small cars standing! And still does 45mpg if i drive it hard.

Reliability

5 out of 5

Once in a few months has a bit of trouble starting, engine flooding for some reason, but 99% of the time its fantastic

Image

5 out of 5

I think the polo is the best looking small hatchback. Right up until the new model with the daft Merc-like lights, which have ruined the small but tough image of the Polo.

Comfort

5 out of 5

Very comfortable to drive, lots of adjustments possible to seats, steering etc. Good seats, good driving position.

Security

3 out of 5

Factory fitted immobiliser, self-fitted toad alarm which adds ""remote"" to the central locking.

Service

1 out of 5

Had no service from VW so cannot comment. My Dad has a new Bora though, and VW's service has been A*

Problems

Bodywork
Stonechipped bonnet and wings, but what do i want from a car thats done 170k miles!! Few rust spots where previous owner hasn't touched up deep chips.

Engine
Still runs fantastic, but occasionally (once in ~3 months) it won't start easily.

Gearbox
Still original as far as i know, still perfect.

Other
Needs a new clutch, but thats not a problem, it just happens!!
