Vauxhall Astra Hatchback (98-05)

Summary

4 out of 5

What does this car say about you?
Not sure.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
Never recieved any negative comments. Always looked good when it was washed (Star Silver), but keeping the plastic trim black was a pain.

Would you buy this car again and why?
I got rid of it as the family out grew it. Did nearly buy an Astra Estate. It was a good car, you'd be amazed what you could fit in it. Driving across europe with wife, child, 2 cats and all our luggage. My only regret was not buying the 1.8 16v. I put 76k on it, I would get 30-35k out of a set of michelin tyres. The servicing was reasonable. Economy was good.

What are you likely to buy next?
I bought a Jeep.

Buying experience

Type of dealer you bought from?
Franchise

Did you buy this car new?
New

What price did you pay?
£14,000

When did you buy the car?
September 1998

Did you get a good deal and why?
I bought it tax free for a start. I got a good trade in on my Orion and got a competitive price and finance from the dealer. We even got him to throw in Mats and a Vauxhall umbrella.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
Was better value and a better drive than the Golf.

What was the dealer like?
Sherwoods in Darlington, very good service.

Driving it

4 out of 5

What's it like to drive?
Good away from the lights. Lacks a bit of mid range punch, you need to go down two cogs to get her moving when overtaking. Handling was very tidy and quite grippy on 195/60 tyres. I have seen off a Golf GTi on a twisty road before now.

What's it like to park?
Quite easy, rearward visibility could have been better.

Living with it

Have you had any problems with the car?
It never let me down. Started first time every time for 6 years.

What's most practical about your car?
Comfotable seats, reasonable boot. One touch opening and closing on both front windows.

Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
CD player a must.
