Vauxhall Astra Hatchback (98-05)

Value

2 out of 5

New model out has made depreciation on this model really bad.

Costs

1 out of 5

Drinks petrol and uses much too much oil.

Driving

3 out of 5

Not bad if you can ignore bad under steer and rubbish brakes.

Performance

3 out of 5

Not bad for a 1.6 8v auto, but not as good as I hoped.

Reliability

1 out of 5

Spent at least 3 months in the dealers, now after various issues, worst of which was a failed head gasket at 17k.

It's a Vauxhall.

Comfort

4 out of 5

Very comfy seats are nice and supportive, but headrests are a bit rubbish.

Not been nicked, but who wants a 1.6 auto Astra?

Service

1 out of 5

Service was very poor, dealers never supplied a courtesy car and failed to keep me informed about the status of the work being done.

Problems

Bodywork
Looks nice. Look out for dents, as it seems to dent very easy.

Engine
Failed head gasket at 17k, ecu problems and poor power.

Gearbox
Nice auto although changes can be sluggish when cold.

Other
Excessive tyre wear. Dealer told me that this was normal because the car had power steering.
