Mercedes-Benz V-Class (96-02)

Value

2 out of 5

Seemed ok, but has not lived up to expectations.

Costs

1 out of 5

Some parts prices are pretty frightening! i.e. exhaust over £1500!!

Driving

3 out of 5

Pretty reasonable for the size of vehicles and not to difficult around town.

Performance

2 out of 5

Ok performance when light, but strugles when loaded. 2.2 diesel is much better.

Reliability

1 out of 5

Far to many faults for the badge! Gearbox fails repeatedly, although they do keep fixing it for free. Drive shaft boots failed at 40k miles (common fault) and expensive. Radiator failed at 60k miles.

Image

1 out of 5

Far too many used as taxis now! Image gone right down the pan.

Comfort

3 out of 5

Good comfortable seats and plenty of legroom. Can carry 7 and their luggage.

Excellent, but expensive; 18k-mile service £320.

Problems

Bodywork
Lots of rattles. Excellent paint finish, though!

Engine
Radiator, poly v belt tensioner. Radiator replaced by 60k miles - not good.

Gearbox
Auto box on pre-1999 models is a turkey! Has fault in ECU that Mercedes seem unable to fix.
