Mazda RX-8 (231ps) 4d (2004/54)

Mazda RX-8 (231ps) 4d (2004/54) - Owner Review

Very nimble and light, predominantly due to the small engine and 50:50 weight distribution. Lack of torque and analogue speedometer means you don't think your going as fast as you are - but it's just as quick as the competition on paper.

Mazda RX-8 (03-10)

Value

5 out of 5

Great value for money, but your not getting German build quality. Dash is already squeaking in 6 months/3,000 miles

Costs

2 out of 5

Petrol - I've been pretty good, and i'm still averaging 19 MPG/ 250miles per tank. But only needed to fill oil 4 times in 6 months

Driving

Performance

4 out of 5

Straight line from a light, it will be beaten by the competition - unless you're revving it at 4000rpm and drop the clutch

Reliability

3 out of 5

So far so good - but way too soon to tell. Honestly, this is where the BMW is far superior to Mazda, Merc and even Audi. But you pay 40% for a comparable BMW (330ci sport)

Image

5 out of 5

Definetely a head turner - a car that dares to be different and pulls it off well. The rear profile isn't as aggressive at the front.

Comfort

4 out of 5

Comfortable, although it's a little harsh on uneven roads. Handles pot holes well - But not as good as the Germans

Security

5 out of 5

Excellent. Cat 1 alarm as standard and integrated sound system that seems impossible to steal

Service

3 out of 5

Haven't had to so far - but the dealer was poor in sorting out brake disc rust (common fault) and side fins that rusted. Not happy with the quality of service, but that is dealer specification

Problems

Bodywork
So far so good. Marginal concerns on rear light cluster (moisture) and rubber door seals which seem like they might not last more than 3 years without replacement.

Engine
So far so good - does sound a bit whiney, like a washing machine on steroids!

Gearbox
Little stiff at first, but softened up well. Short ratio, quick shift is great, but is used significantly as the ratios are short.

Other
Funny smell during the first 3,000 miles, could be the catalytic converter - apparently a common fault. Bear in mind this is a brand new car, so it's bound to have some teething problems. For a first effort, Mazda are off to a cracking start.
