Ford Escort Hatchback (90-01)

Value

3 out of 5

Fairly cheap in its class.

Costs

3 out of 5

Insurance cheap. Where possible take car to independent garage, Ford dealer will mug you for your money!

Driving

2 out of 5

No PAS, steering is heavy whilst parking.

Performance

1 out of 5

Very sluggish and underpowered. Pulling away from a junction onto a roundabout can be a dangerous proposition. The 1600 is probably more suitable for the size of the car.

Reliability

2 out of 5

Silly minor niggles. Interior dashboard illumination failed. Poor electrics.

Image

3 out of 5

Not bad but the Escort is common and dated now especially since the introduction of the Focus in 1998.

Comfort

3 out of 5

Ride is fairly quiet. Seats can be a bit uncomfortable on a long journey.

Immobiliser only. Have fitted a steering lock for extra protection.

Problems

Bodywork
Rust starting to appear on both rear wheel arches.

Engine
Fuel injection management system failed. £500 for a new unit (under warranty luckily).

Gearbox
Slick, as is the clutch, but 3rd and 5th are close together and take time getting used to.
