Ford Escort Hatchback (90-01)

Value

5 out of 5

I paid 600 quid with no tax and test at 70k miles.

Costs

4 out of 5

Bits are cheap and easy to find at breakers and yards.

Driving

4 out of 5

Not good until I put 16s on. Brakes not great at speed.

Performance

2 out of 5

So slow for a 1.3. Always needs thrashing during normal use. Forget racing other cars.

Reliability

3 out of 5

Never breaks down, but has occasional faults, rear demister, boot release, elec window, worn camshaft, timing chain loose, noisy tappets.

Get it colour coded including bumpers, handles and wing mirrors, then get alloys and spoiler. Easy job.

Comfort

3 out of 5

Driver's seat heavily worn by 75,000 miles.
