BMW 3-Series Touring 316i Lux 5d (1994/L)

BMW 3-Series Touring 316i Lux 5d (1994/L) - Owner Review

The chassis is probably one of the most entertaining ever, but it's also incredibly dangerous if you push it too far, loose the back end and the front will follow. A true driver's car, even in 316 form, no switch-off button for the permanent good fun.

BMW 3-Series Touring (88-94)

Value

5 out of 5

E30s represent excellent value for money, all late (91-) 4 cyl cars can be picked up easily for under £2k, but finding a mint example can be frustrating.

Costs

3 out of 5

Wearables aren't so bad, brake pads exhausts etc, the big stuff can be hugely expensive, worth it nontheless. Fuel Economy is only average, and pretty dire for enthusiastic drivers.

Driving

4 out of 5

The chassis is probably one of the most entertaining ever, but it's also incredibly dangerous if you push it too far, loose the back end and the front will follow. A true driver's car, even in 316 form, no switch-off button for the permanent good fun.

Performance

4 out of 5

Performance out of the later M20 4cyl engines (as used in early E36 cars) isn't as bad as you might think - gets better from mid range and good motorway cruiser, disappointing flat spots though.

Reliability

5 out of 5

Same old story - has never let me down once, this would not be expected of a 10-15 year old Ford, they'd be long gone on the scrappy in fact. Keep up the servicing, change the oil at 6k miles and the BM will reward you.

Image

E30 are ever gaining respect amongst the initiated, the right cars still look cool. Lux pack on the Touring look particularly special, with 15" BBS cross spoke wheels and shadowline door frames. However, boy racers do seem to get their hands on the tat.

Comfort

4 out of 5

Award-winning comfort for 1980s standards. Excellent comprise between sporty/firm and comforting ride. Feels stable and composed at all speeds, mind the corners though.

Security

4 out of 5

Standard deadlocks which are pretty tough, later cars had quality immboilisers. Best to fit aftermarket alarm system.

Service

5 out of 5

Don't use the $tealers, use BMW specialists - still costly but great service.

Problems

Bodywork
Slight rust bubbling on leading edge of the tailgate.

Engine
None - just perfect.

Gearbox
Fine, but this car has not reached 100k miles yet.
