BMW 3-Series Touring (88-94)

Value

5 out of 5

Best banger I ever bought, at under a grand with 150k miles on the clock. Rear seat splits, so very versatile.

Costs

3 out of 5

Not as frugal as I hoped, but that's probably my driving.

Driving

3 out of 5

Soft suspension, comfy but doesn't feel very well attached to the road.

Performance

4 out of 5

Good enough for a 1.8, but not a boyracer car.

Reliability

4 out of 5

Only 10k miles done, so early days. Half the dashboard lights intermittent.

What's an 'image'?

Comfort

4 out of 5

Seats, position, equipment etc good, ride a bit spongy.

Security

4 out of 5

Complicated key system and immobiliser, which I guess is good for the year.

Service

1 out of 5

It tells you when it wants one.

Problems

Bodywork
It's a banger - rusty tailgate and a few other spots, window seals poor. Generally tatty, but hence cheap and a lot of car for the money.

Engine
Smooth through revs. Sometimes stalls when idling cold.

Gearbox
Sensible ratios makes the best of 1.8 engine.

Other
Electric sunroof sticky, but most old ones are. At least it doesn't leak.
