Nissan rethinking the ideal medium-sector model? And succeeding? Implausible just a few years ago, but the Japanese company has designed eye-catching bodies and matched them up with stylish and innovative interiors to create one of the sector leaders. It's also pleasant to drive and well-specified; even base models get climate control.

Safety is as good as any car in the class, ABS is standard - but you pay extra for some electronic driving aids. Remote central locking and an anti-hijack and perimetric alarm on all models.

Some owners have reported loose trim and rattles, but aesthetics aside, the tough mechanicals will be going long after the seats have worn thin.
