Nissan rethinking the ideal medium-sector model? And succeeding? Implausible just a few years ago, but the Japanese company has designed eye-catching bodies and matched them up with stylish and innovative interiors to create one of the sector leaders. It's also pleasant to drive and well-specified; even base models get climate control.

Buying used

Nissan stopped producing the model for the UK in 2006 because of slow sales, and if you choose a model registered after August 2004, you’ll be getting the final development of the car. Choose a 54-plate reg or later to be sure, as these models are better to drive and have more kit. A 1.8 SE on a 54-plate comes with alloy wheels, automatic climate control, a CD player and a rear-view camera for reversing.

You'll be competing against stronger, more tempting options in this sector, but Primera is popular as a taxi or repmobile, so there should be plenty of buyers about.
