No-nonsense 4x4 vehicles are becoming increasingly rare. Most buyers want the looks and practicality of offroaders rather than their ability on tough terrain.

Nissan Patrol (98-09)
Superb off-road ability, huge road presence, ideal workhorse, practically indestructible
Unrefined on-road, heavy steering, spongy brakes, dated inside, noisy engine

No-nonsense 4x4 vehicles are becoming increasingly rare. Most buyers want the looks and practicality of offroaders rather than their ability on tough terrain. This isn't the case with the Patrol though - it's a go-anywhere, near indestructible vehicle that's designed to be driven through the harshest of environments. The long-running series of three and five-door models has evolved gradually (three-door models were dropped from the current line-up in early 2003).

Early versions were utilitarian, although this generation - launched in 1998 - is more comfortable. It's very poor on the road though with vague steering, unresponsive brakes and a spongy ride. The Patrol was revised in 2004 with a new body, upgraded interior and more standard equipment.

What owners say...

Size of the boot, the extra steats mean only one car when friends and family come to visit. Can take everything when out on holidays with the family.
