While the Evo models tend to grab the headlines, Mitsubishi is also keen to attract family buyers who are looking for practicality and value for money, rather than outright performance. The result is the Lancer Sportback - a five-door hatchback based on the saloon.

While the Evo models tend to grab the headlines, Mitsubishi is also keen to attract family buyers who are looking for practicality and value for money, rather than outright performance. The result is the Lancer Sportback - a five-door hatchback based on the saloon. It shares the same front-end styling as its high powered Evo X counterpart, but that's where the good looks end.

The rear is bulbous and ugly from every angle while the interior is plasticky and has a budget feel to it. On the plus side it is comfortable to drive, has good passenger space and a decent boot. Standard equipment is generous too with all models getting air conditioning, cruise control and electric windows. There are only two engines available, but it's the 2.0-litre diesel, borrowed from Volkswagen, which is easily the better choice.
