The Chinese owned car manufacturer has finally broadened its range with the MG Motor UK MG3 supermini. With prices starting from £8,399, the new car is not the cheapest in the sector, but decent levels of standard equipment puts it nose to nose with equivalent Dacia Sanderos and Chevrolet Sparks.

The MG3 may be something of a simple and honest car, but its trim line up is anything but. Over-egging the funkiness of the product the range starts with the 3Time then moves through 3Form, 3Form Sport and ends with 3Style.

Standard MG3 Equipment

Ignore the naming for a minute though and the good news is that as part of the firm’s value offering the MG3 comes with plenty of standard equipment no matter what model you choose. All come with LED daytime running lights, hill hold, six airbags, stability control and traction control.

You’ll need to pay for the 3Form model if you want DAB radio, air conditioning, leather steering wheel with audio controls, Bluetooth and height adjustable driver’s seat. Even remote central locking, something that we now take for granted on modern cars, isn’t standard on 3Time trim.

Those worried about image as much as value will also appreciate the 3Form’s body-coloured door handles, square chrome tailpipe and vanity mirrors on the back of the sun visors.

Climb to 3Form Sport trim and not much changes to be honest, though you do benefit from 16-inch alloy wheels as standard and body coloured side sills. Top of the range is the 3Style which adds cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers and reverse parking sensors – and that’s your lot.

Optional MG3 accessories

However, just like that other British supermini, the MG3 offers a vast array of options to help personalise your chosen model. There’s not so much in the way of extra kit, though you can add part leather trim, as it’s all about colours, wheels and graphics.

There are ten different body colours and 13 different graphic packages available. The latter are something of an acquired taste, ranging from the relatively subtle stripes to the rather more in your face tyre track motif, patriotic British flag or RAF-style octagon.

You can complement your choice of special vinyl with a set of 16-inch alloy wheels in an array of finishes and colours including bright red, white and black. Different mirror caps (four) are available and inside there are six choices of trim combinations to decide upon.
