This is the next generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon, the firm’s popular premium executive saloon. It now shares much of its technology with the flagship Mercedes product – the S-Class.

This is one area this car shines. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon comfort levels are stratospheric. The seats we’ve tried so far are seriously soft and supportive.

We’ve also tested the car on a number of suspension set-ups. While the standard steel-sprung Comfort configuration is beautifully supple and smooth, we’d urge you to at least test drive one with the AIRMATIC air suspension system.

This latter set-up absolutely transforms the car from a comfortable cruiser to what feels every bit like a luxury limo. The S-Class is simply peerless in this regard, but here we find the C-Class snapping at its bigger brother’s heels very convincingly indeed.

Being longer, wider and with an extended wheelbase, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon practicality has improved over the previous version.

There’s more room in the back for passengers, and this translates to a deceptively large rear passenger compartment. Sitting behind a six-foot-high driver left more than ample headroom and knee room.

You get multiple storage options in the cabin including twin cup-holders up front, plus all C-Class Saloons come with a standard reversing camera too, which will make parking a lot easier.

The boot has expanded by five litres to a total of 480 litres, and as an optional extra you can get a motorised boot lid to further enhance the usability of the C-Class.

Behind the wheel

Again, here the C-Class shines. The interior is far plusher than its rivals have so far achieved and the materials used are of excellent quality. It feels nicely built too.

The controls and information screens are laid out intuitively in the cabin, and it’s simple to flick through various parameters on the dash using the steering wheel-mounted buttons.

A few optional extras that we like are the Touchpad system, which helps control the multimedia and navigation functions, and the head-up display which can show navigation instructions directly in front of the driver on the windscreen.
