McLaren 570GT Coupe (2016 -) Safety & Reliability

Review by Keith Jones on
Second of what will become a three bodystyle Sports Series family is the McLaren 570GT, a slightly softer, more comfortable take on a high-performance two-seater from the Woking-based manufacturer. Like the rortier McLaren 570S and entry-level 540C, the 570GT is a coupe, but unlike the other two with their aerodynamic rear buttresses, this one has a side-hinged glass tailgate instead of a vented engine cover, liberating a further 220 litres of storage space in the process.

  • Not crash tested by Euro NCAP
  • Sophisticated on-board electronics
  • Rigid carbonfibre safety cell

It’s the norm for high-performance and specialist cars to miss out on being crash tested by the safety experts at Euro NCAP and the McLaren 570GT is no exception – that’s not to suggest it’s remotely an unsafe car, though.

As you’d expect there’s the usual raft of airbags, a super-strong carbonfibre passenger cell and sophisticated electronics to control the car’s stability to varying degrees via the Normal, Sport and Track selectors. While this is a very easy car to drive fast the systems are designed so to prevent you getting into too much difficulty in the first place.

Ensuring you can see and be seen, especially at night, are full LED lights front and rear, while for a car capable of topping 200mph, we’d strongly recommend investing in the optional carbon ceramic brakes – pity they’re not standard at this price.

  • Proven mechanical package
  • High-quality engineering
  • Impeccable build quality

As the McLaren 570GT hasn’t been on sale for long it’s difficult at this stage to assess its reliability.

What we can say is that although it’s part of the newer, smaller Sports Series line-up, the fundamental mechanical and structural components are shared across the McLaren range.

McLaren prides itself in the high quality of not only the materials employed to make the car but also the production itself. This is a company that forged its reputation in the high-precision engineering world of Formula 1 and the road cars are built to similarly exacting standards.
