With the celebratory bells of success of the DS3 still ringing in the ears of the hierarchy at Citroen, the French manufacturer has decided to continue the DS theme and followed up with the introduction of the DS4. Based on the C4 hatch, the Citroen DS4 is the more premium version of the French firm’s more sedate hatchback.

Citroen has employed an easy-to-understand spec line-up and there’s not much in the way of Citroen DS4 accessories to choose from.

Standard Citroen DS4 equipment

There are three trim levels - DSign, DStyle and Dsport - and all come with a good level of standard equipment that might entice buyers where an exhaustive kit list is a top priority.

Entry-level DSign cars comes with air con, 17-inch alloy wheels, hill hold function front electric windows, heated and electric mirrors, cloth seat trim, steering wheel with height-and-reach adjustment, front foglights, cruise control and driver’s, side and passenger’s airbags.

Step up to DStyle and you get added luxuries such as partial leather seat trim, 18-inch alloys, parking sensors, sat nav and sports seats.

The range-topping DSport adds full leather upholstery, heated seats and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Optional Citroen DS4 accessories

Cost options include an upgraded Denon stereo system, which can also be added to the car with an improved eMyWay sat nav system.

Despite the added premium, the Denon stereo system isn’t exactly a revelation and buyers should not expect the kind of improvement in sound quality that you would get from, say a Bose upgrade in an Audi.

The sat nav system isn’t the easiest system to use either, and despite entering a postcode for where you want to go it can often give a totally unrelated destination.

The mid-range DStyle is possibly the best compromise, though the cheaper DSign does have enough little touches to keep owners happy.

With the limited cost options, and the less-than-convincing performance of the added sat nav and Denon stereo, you’ll be better off using that cash to upgrade a from petrol to a diesel model.

Stepping up to DStyle won’t massively improve the resale value but, of course, the extra kit might help to attract more buyers.

DStyle models and above also come with Citroen’s useful eTouch system. This includes an SOS button that alerts the emergency services if an airbag goes off in the car. Another function is a button to call Citroen Assistance if you have a breakdown. Using the car’s GPS system, this allows the breakdown services to pinpoint your location.
