Select Comfort mode and the suspension and steering are tailored to smooth driving. The softer ride absorbs lumps and bumps but also leans more in corners.

The ride in Sport and Sport Plus mode is similarily firm. This makes suspension more solid but not unbearable, although it does get tiresome on really notchy roads.

Heated leather seats offer excellent back and side support and offer a range of adjustment to allow anyone to get a decent driving position within seconds. You also get pneumatic lumbar adjustment and manually adjustable under-thigh support.

There’s a bit of road noise from the tyres but that’s the only interruption from the sound of the V8.

Technically a four-seater but offering only a small amount of room in the rear seats, the back of the M6 is only really useful if you want to carry a couple of bags. Anyone older than a teenager will start getting uncomfortable on a long trip.

The boot is a good size though, with 460 litres of space that should be more than enough for a set of golf clubs or a big shopping run.

Visibility is out of the rear is not helped by the coupe roofline, plus the thick, angled front pillars don’t do much for the front view either. To get around this you could pick a clever camera system - placed on the front corners of the car – this helps visibility on tight, angled junctions.

Inside the cabin is made of high quality materials, top-notch plastics and soft leather all over the place. It’s laid out well and the entertainment and air-con systems are all controlled by the BMW iDrive dial on the centre console of the car. This, plus a multi-function steering wheel, leaves the dash free of clutter.
