BMW claims its 1-Series M Coupe is the spiritual successor to the first M3, the legendary 'E30' from the Eighties. Those are strong words, since that model is widely regarded as one of the best cars ever to come from BMW's performance and motorsport wing, the 'M' Division.

Buying used

With only 450 right-hand-drive models coming to the UK you will probably pay a premium even for a used model. You’ll need to check for excessive wear and tear as ‘M’ drivers are known to populate track days. Well maintained, low-mileage examples should be top of your list but they won't be cheap. The best advice is to check out the BMW approved Used scheme.

1M prices are likely to remain high because there are plenty of M enthusiasts out there prepared to pay top dollar. Expect to make a good return especially if your car has been serviced at regular intervals and has been kept free of knocks and scuffs. If you have resisted the temptation to take the car on track days it'll be worth even more at resale.
